President’s message
Warm greetings from the Anglo-Indians’ Welfare Association, New Delhi!
The Delhi Anglo-Indians Association was formed during a Convention held at Kerala House, New Delhi on 11th March 2015 at the initiative of the Federation of Anglo-Indian Associations in India (FAIAI).
The Association was registered under Societies Registration Act 1860 on 9.3.2016 in the name of Anglo-Indians’ Welfare Association (AIWA) and is affiliated to the Federation of Anglo-Indian Associations in India (FAIAI).
The main purpose AIWA is to bring together the scattered minority Anglo-Indian community in the Archdiocese of Delhi, on one platform and to cater to their welfare. The community is going through many problems, and these could be addressed only when they are presented through an appropriate forum to the authorities.
Our desire is to reach out to all our Anglo-Indian brethren through this website and to provide you a glimpse of the activities undertaken by AIWA.
I wish you all the very best.
Message from Archbishop Anil J T Couto, Archbishop of Delhi and Patron of Anglo Indians' Welfare Association.
Warm greetings in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord!
I am happy to write this special message to the Anglo-Indian Community in the Archdiocese of Delhi.
I note that the leaders of the Anglo-Indians’ Welfare Association (AIWA) are doing their best to bring the scattered minority community together under its umbrella, in order to address the many problems they are facing. I would like AIWA to give special attention to the spiritual needs of the members of the community. With this objective in mind, I have appointed senior priests as chaplains for the community — first Rev. Fr. Victor D’Souza and, since September 2021, Rev. Fr. Nicholas Dias. I understand that Fr. Dias, along with the office bearers of AIWA, has visited all the parishes in the Archdiocese of Delhi to gather information about the community and is organizing various programmes for them.
I feel proud when I recall that the small Anglo-Indian community has contributed immensely to nation-building in the fields of education, nursing, sports, defence services, and in establishing the Indian Railways and Post & Telegraph services. Hundreds of Anglo-Indian schools, achievements in sports (especially hockey), several war heroes, and two Service Chiefs — the Chief of Naval Staff and an Air Marshal — are among the many examples of the Anglo-Indian presence in India.
The Archdiocese stands with the Anglo-Indian community, which is an ethnic and linguistic minority among minorities, and supports their struggle to maintain their distinct cultural identity.
The main concerns of the Association are to:
(a) Identify and bring the members of the community in the Archdiocese under the umbrella of the Association;
(b) Work closely with the Anglo-Indians in different parts of Delhi NCR;
(c) Bring different schemes available with the Union and State Governments to the members, etc.
(d) It is the priority of the Association to bring the Anglo-Indian youth together to keep alive the unique culture and tradition of the community, working closely with the Federation in this regard.
To identify the members of the Anglo-Indian community, the Executive Committee members along with the Chaplain visited different parishes to meet the members of the community and to get a first-hand information about problems faced
